Caltech is a small institute, receiving about 5,500 applications for admission each year. Of these, approximately 1,200 are interviewed and about 300 are admitted. International students are not eligible for need-based financial aid but may be eligible for merit-based scholarships.

To be considered for admission to Caltech, applicants must complete the following steps:

1) Submit an application through the Common Application or Coalition Application website.
2) Request that official transcripts be sent from every college or university you have attended directly to Caltech’s Office of Admissions. Please do not send unofficial copies of transcripts or any other correspondence to our office until you have been asked to do so by a member of our staff.
3) Arrange for two letters of recommendation to be sent on your behalf to Caltech’s Office of Admissions. At least one letter should come from a teacher who can speak to your academic abilities; the other letter can come from a coach, employer, counselor, mentor, research supervisor, or anyone else who knows you well and can provide insight into your character and aspirations. These letters should be submitted electronically through the Common Application or Coalition Application website (whichever platform you used to submit your application) or by mail at least two weeks prior to the application deadline. Please do not send paper copies of recommendations unless you have been asked by a member of our staff to do so in exceptional circumstances
